Аннотация:
Цель исследования. В соответствии с проблемно-хронологическим подходом, в статье систематизированы материалы газеты «The New York Times» о Н.А. Назарбаеве за период 1989-2001 гг. Несмотря на членство с 1962-1991 гг. в коммунистической партии, осуждение распада СССР, продвижение идеи новой экономической и политической интеграции на постсоветском пространстве, президент Казахстана изображался на страницах «The New York Times» прогрессивным независимым политиком, способным осуществить переход бывшей социалистической республики к капитализму. Тем не менее к концу второй половины 1990-х гг. произошли разительные изменения сложившегося образа, казахстанский лидер стал ассоциироваться с автократом и коррупционером. Данная работа направлена на поиск причин трансформации образа казахстанского политика. Выводы. В результате исследования сделан вывод, что причиной трансформации образа президента Казахстана стало ухудшение отношений с официальным Вашингтоном. Благоприятный образ Н.А. Назарбаева в »The New York Times» был индикатором не только доброжелательного отношения журналистов газеты, но и лояльности Белого дома. Пока казахстанские власти безоговорочно прислушивались к позиции США и действовали с учетом их интересов, образ политика Н.А. Назарбаева оставался положительным для читателей нью-йоркской газеты. В конце 1980-х и первой половине 1990-х гг. Вашингтон был благосклонен к Н.А. Назарбаеву, т.к. политика президента их устраивала: отстаивание независимости, переход к рыночной экономике, отказ от ядерного оружия, доступ к казахстанской нефти. В этот период негативные черты казахстанского лидера не отображались, либо сглаживалась на страницах нью-йоркской газеты, тогда как сильные стороны нарочито подчеркивались. После того как к середине 1990-х гг.. основные американские цели в среднеазиатской республике были достигнуты, интерес к фигуре Н.А. Назарбаева стал угасать. Вслед за этим, образ Н.А. Назарбаев начал трансформироваться в худшую сторону, сменившись на автократа к концу 1990-х гг.
